I'm trying to get a sense of what, say, an American privateer captain might be wearing during the War of 1812. I can find a picture of, say, the privateer captain Otway Burns, but it isn't clear to me if that's what he wore on-ship or if that's what he had is portrait done in.

I'd be grateful for any pointers to good books that might cover the subject, or good sources of images. For example, I've browsed NMM with no love so far, but perhaps my search-fu is poor there.
