Post Home defences
From The Times, August 25, 1794:

" ..... WEYMOUTH, August 23..... Last night an nine o'clock a signal was fired from the Southampton frigate in the Bay, that a strange fleet was in sight, supposed to be that of the enemy; the signal was answered by the dragoons and infantry on shore, and in half an hour the Buckinghamshire militia, the first regiment of dragoons, and the Weymouth Royal volunteer Cavalry, formed on the Esplanade where they remained under arms for upwards of an hour, when they returned to the camp. This was a manoeuvre to show His Majesty the celerity with which the corps could be formed in case of any appearance of an invasion ....... "

It goes on to say that the following morning, the Royal Family took a cruise in the Channel aboard the Southampton.

Post Re: Home defences
The Observer, December 11th, 1796:

" ...... ..Notices from the Lords of the Admiralty are posted up in Portsmouth, Portsea, and Gosport, in forming the inhabitants that all the fire-ships, gun-boats, &c are completely equipped, and inviting the people to learn the use of artillery, and go on board these craft, in case the French should attempt to invade this kingdom, which, according to this State Paper, appears to be a matter seriously intended. ...."

I thought the above was interesting. We have a thread dedicated to the Sea Fencibles, but does anyone have any further information along civil defence lines, like the above?
