There are a couple of less than favourable reviews at Amazon.com.

Thanks for pointing that out. I was also surprised to find that these reviews are only on Amazon.com and are not listed on Amazon.co.uk, the British branch.

Brian Lavery: "Royal Tars of Old England: The Lower Deck of the Royal Navy, 875-1850"

I noticed that this will be available soon from Amazon (USA) and is already in stock at Amazon (UK). At the UK site, you can view the Index of the book and reviews.

An e-mail from Pen and Sword Books that came today (29 July 2011) announces a new book.

Warships of the Napoleonic Era by Robert Gardiner. Only just published by Seaforth Publishing - which makes the claim that it is priced at GBP36 "Was £45" rather puzzling! Although Gardiner is a well known author, I find even that price a bit steep for a 168 page paperback.

Cheers,

Martin

Just received from the Navy Records Society, Vol 157 "The Navy of Edward VI and Mary I".

Looks fascinating as always.

An addendum: Olaf Janzen, of Corner Brook, NL, regularly posts notices (but not reviews) of new maritime books to the discussion list MARHST-L. He has just commented on this book: it was first published under the same title in 1999, but the new edition is said to be completely revised, with new and additional illustrations. It is sold in North America by the Naval Institute Press.
