Post Nathaniel Bowditch
Another AoS book designed for young readers is "Carry On, Mr. Bowditch" by Jean Lee Latham. This book is about an American named Nathaniel Bowditch (1773-1838) who had an impact on sailing navigation around the world.

Here is some info from Amazon about this book: Readers today are still fascinated by "Nat," an eighteenth-century nautical wonder and mathematical wizard. Nathaniel Bowditch grew up in a sailor’s world—Salem, Massachusetts in the early days, when tall-masted ships from foreign ports crowded the wharves. But Nat didn’t promise to have the makings of a sailor; he was too physically small. Nat may have been slight of build, but no one guessed that he had the persistence and determination to master sea navigation in the days when men sailed only by "log, lead, and lookout." Nat’s long hours of study and observation, collected in his famous work, The American Practical Navigator (also known as the "Sailors" Bible"), stunned the sailing community and made him a New England hero.

Here is some biographical information about Bowditch.

PS: The Bowditch book is also for young teens as Ron Wanttaja's books (see next post) are. I suspect that "I Am Horatio Nelson" is for a younger age. Kudos to all involved in the Nelson project. Let's hope it not only educates but guides some young minds to read more AoS books in later years.

Allow me to plug my own children's books, here: "The Key to Honor" and its sequel, "The Price of Command."

Age of sail books intended for Young Adult readers (~12-15), set in the US Navy during the War of 1812.

Speaking of Powder Monkeys.....

"The Powder Monkey" by George J. Galloway is about a young American who goes to sea seeking his father during the War of 1812.

Correction: This is NOT written for juvenile readers even though the main character is just 12 years old at the beginning of the book. I made a hasty judgment based on the title.
