Post Tom Grundner: HMS Diamond
HMS Diamond by Tom Grundner

This was actually a fun book to read. I am looking forward to the next in this series ("The Temple"). From the setup, it should be a very interesting and unusual time for Sir Sidney Smith.

Possible Spoilers below

In this second novel in the SSS series, Smith finally assumes the central role.

The author does not just take the facts from Sir Sidney Smith's life and follow them exactly. The historical postscript at the end explains the liberties that he takes to allow the inclusion of fictional and real characters and events. Thus a pleasant reading experience is attempted. I think the author succeeds in this admirably.

The only things I disliked were few. The historical notes at the end did not match the chapter numbers exactly although all the notes seemed to be present and in order. Another was the side trip by Lucas and Susan that included meeting with the Biblical disciple John. This was possibly the strangest element I have ever read in an Age of Sail novel.
