The Gathering Storm

This was another excellent one by Peter Smalley - full of intrigue - which embraced activity this side of the Channel and in France, plenty of action at sea, introduced new characters, and with some very interesting depth of character in one of the main protagonists.

Excellent! I look forward to where Smalley takes us next.

I agree Mary... a crackin' good story. One of the better novels that I have read. Even the scenes ashore were fast paced with a number of twists and turns. I kept wondering: "who could be trusted?" As soon as I thought I had a handle on things, up would pop another twist... in the plot or in a character.

And the action asea was wonderful. I'm not entirely sure that using a carronade as a mortar is historical or even possible but it fit the situation so very well. Throw in a little "Demolition Derby" and "Whoa Nelly"!

I'm starting the next book ("The Pursuit") immediately.
