New logo for the SN Forum
I like the new logo for the forum, Susan!
Would you care to tell us more about it, please?

Ditto on Mil Goose's praise. I love the two-decker in the logo.

Thanks for the comments. It's not the most exciting logo, but it's better than the generic phpBB one.
The ship is the Leander, 50. I scanned it from one of Basil Hall's books.

Hummm.....a 50....she looks more like a 64 to me. Is it possible that Mr. Hall made an error? Leander was a two decked frigate, with no raised/seperate forecastle and quarterdeck. Don't matter....I love the new logo whatever ship it is! Well done Susan

I hope not. He sailed on her and I think he would have had a word with the publishers if they got it wrong.
I think we're speaking of different ships. The frigate was a newer ship. This Leander was one of the old 50-gunners. She participated in the Battle of the Nile under the command of Captain Thomas B. Thompson.

I stand corrected ma'm. She just looks longer and heavier armed than the 50's that I'm familiar with.

When I first looked at her, I thought she might be a 74...foolish me. After counting open ports, I make out 12 per lower and upper deck and what appear to be another six or so on the quarterdeck and one on the fo'c'sle. Assuming carronades on the quarterdeck, she would indeed be a 50.
(Charity smacks self upside the head re: always counting ports and not assuming from brief glances)
She is indeed a fine looking ship and a dramatic improvement, though I have heard that the 50s were quite crank sailers (as could be the 44-gun two-deckers of the pre-revolutionary war period).

I take the liberty of suggesting perhaps we can move this debate on 50-gun ships over to the ships section, as it such an interesting one?
