HMS VICTORY in a large bottle
One of the four plinths in Trafalgar Square has never been permanently occupied by a statue. In recent years this plinth has been used for the temporary display of various items of modern or installation art. It has had on it a large 1:30 scale model of Nelson's Victory
inside a huge plastic 'bottle' for most of 2011.
The Art Fund is now seeking money to buy this object for display outside the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich:Nelson's Ship in a Bottle
It was created by Yinka Shonibare, who seems to be well regarded in the art world. A number of prominent people are supporting the idea of purchasing it for the NMM at a cost of over £360,000. If you want to comment on this, it is possible to do so via the Art Fund web-site, but apparently only via a Facebook entry. I have tried to make my views known, but in view of the support that it is getting from the art community I must keep quiet and let you come to your own conclusions!
