Post Vauxhall Gardens

The Times, August 4th, 1809:

" .... Vauxhall Gardens were crowded on Wednesday evening; some additional brilliancy was given to the illuminations in honour of the Sailing Match. About 4000 persons were present, many of who remained till four o'clock in the morning. ...."

In modern parlance they certainly had the "wow factor": view here.

Presumably the races took part on the Thames as I found an entry in the Sporting Magazine, Vol.22, 1828: " .....The distance was from Westminster-Bridge round a boat moored just below Hammersmith, and back to Vauxhall ...."

A Google search revealed other distances.
