Post The harvest

On a topical note - well, here in Britain - from The Times, August 14th, 1793:

" .... HARVEST IN WORCESTERSHIRE .... the harvest in this and the neighbouring counties is begun. The crops of wheat, though, thin on the ground, are likely to be very plentiful. The beans and barley have been much improved by the late rains; but they will, notwithstanding, be scarce.

The clover-feed has suffered much by the long drought; the oats, though not much grown in this county, are much improved by the late rains, and so is every other kind of vegetation.

The hay-harvest has been extremely good; and if the crops are not so plentiful as they were last year, they will be made up by the goodness of the quality. ...."

On a personal note, I realise that many parts of Britain have had a very soggy summer, but here in East Anglia it has been warm and very dry. The harvest, like that quoted in the snippet, was reaped in August. Just now, the orchards, mostly apples, are heavy with fruit.
