The Times, July 13th, 1786:

" ... They write from Penryn, in Cornwall, that a French smuggling vessel was on the 2nd inst. in the evening drove on shore in a storm of wind and rain, within two miles of that place, and was entirely lost; the crew were saved, and some part of her cargo was got out; but a body of men from the tin mines coming down, carried away all they could lay hold of, a circumstance never remembered that those people were guilty of before. ..."

It reminds me of that incident in Devon a couple of years ago.
