Post Anti-Slavery Efforts
Mil mentioned Thomas Clarkson and his younger brother, John (a naval officer), in another thread. I decided that a thread about anti-slavery efforts by the various navies would be interesting.

More later...

:D aye, I claim them for Wisbech!!! -- but on the fiction front, I thought I would mention Jonathan Lunn's Killigrew, RN with the African slave trade as its background.

This site features some good background information:

The Transatlantic Slave Trade

I read that T. Clarkson interviewed many sailors as part of the process of gathering information for his writings. Mil, do you know anything about this? I wonder if his notes still exist?

No, I regret that I don't. I will enquire in the Museum next time I'm in that direction. I am planning another visit there in due course, anyhow.

The name Clarkson is one that you grow up with in Wisbech with a road named after him and numerous buildings, and a school, etc. You might be interested in seeing an old photograph of the Clarkson Memorial. Interestingly, the row of buildings in the bottom left hand corner, is York Row, where the Clarkson family lived, and which displays a Blue Plaque to that effect.

Trial held on 12 Jan 1820
