Post USMC Officers?
Does anyone here have any information about requirements for becoming an officer in the US Marine Corps during the French Revolution through Napoleonic (1793-1815) era? How common was mavericking - being commissioned from the ranks? How did the Corps expand in time of war and shrink when the war was over? I've been scouring the net for info. I've also found conflicting info on the actual number of officers in the Corps at that time.

Thanks for any and all help!

Might I suggest contacting the United States Marine Corps History Division. Click Here

According to the USN List of Nov 1800:

William W. Burrows was Lieutenant Colonel Commandant

Under him there were 4 Captains, 18 1st Lieutenants, and 18 2nd Lieutenants.

Don's suggestion is a good one. If they don't have the data compiled, you may have to compile them using the lists. (Sorry I only have the 1800 one at hand.)
