The Observer, March 10th, 1793:

" ...... The recruiting for the Marines goes on briskly at Manchester, many thousand pounds have been subscribed for the purpose of raising a corps of 500 men for that useful service. Colonel Jackman, of the Chatham division, is arrived there, to regulate the different recruiting parties; and the Band of Music of the Portsmouth Division is constantly playing martial airs, to charm the aspiring heroes of Manchester to enlist. ...."
