The Times, February 1st, 1785:

" .... By the reform whch is to take place in the Customs, the whole train of Patent Officers are to be abolished, as well as all kind of fees whatsoever. The following is the plan on which the Out-ports are to be established, each Officer being to be allowed an adequate salary in the room of all fees, gratuities, &c.

Collector and Clerks
Comptroller and Clerks
Coast-waiters, and

The offices of Customer and Searcher, together with the whole number of Riding Officers, are also to be abolished as useless. ...."
