Post Marine Police

Susan's mention of the Dockyard Police reminded me that I'd seen mention of the Marine Police several times before in the TDA, e.g:

The Times, October 12th, 1798

" .... The benefits derived from the Institution of a Marine Police, become every day more apparent; and the late great arrivals from the West Indies, have clearly pointed ou the necessity of its being universally encouraged by the Merchants, in order that a sufficient number of hands may have employment, so as to be always ready to act on great emergencies.

On Tuesday it was discovered that a considerable quantity of his Majesty's naval stores, suspected to be unlawfully obtained, was concealed in a transport employed in conveying stores from one dock-yard to another, and now delivery her cargo at Deptford......."

It carries on with further information about the searching of the ship, and what was discovered.

For further info about the Institution: read here.
