Post Gun boats

I'm always interested in the work of the navy is less glamorous roles, and find the protection of the coast and harbours interesting. Hence a couple of extracts from The Times, August 26th, 1797:

" ... The gun vessel, No.23, Lieut. Suckling, has sailed from Wells to Hull, where she is to be stationed.

La Vesuve, gun boat, commanded by Lieut. W Elliott, succeeds the above vessel at Wells, in order to protect that harbour and coast. ....."

p.s. I was in Wells in late autumn on a little day jaunt out on my concessionary bus pass in and amid Nelson's territory in north Norfolk; such pleasant countryside it is, and made all the better when someone else is driving through those narrow village roads with those unyielding flint walls, and besides no one argues with a bus. :)

p.p.s. Wells-next-the-Sea where the Albatros schooner is often tied up there and, besides going to sea, also has dining facilites.
