From THE TIMES, October 13, 1803


" ....Yesterday morning the frigates, the Vestal, Heroine, Iris and Unité, intended for Block Ships, sailed from Woolwich and Deptford to their place of destination at the Lower Hope, to guard the entrance of the River Thames. The Trinity-house colours were flying on board each ship. Previous to their departure, 600 of the Trinity-house Volunteer Fencibles arrived from the different quays, where they mustered and embarked to take their proper stations on board their respective ships. Both sides of the River were lined with people to see them........"

The Times, November 15th, 1803:

" ........... The block ships are so completely equipped across the Thames, that the Commissioners of the Chustoms have posted up a notice in the long room stating, that it was not safe even with a pilot to pass the Lower Hope at night. ....... "
