Post Beacons

From The Times, December 24th, 1799:

" ... The Trinity-House, Newcastle, has ordered two heading beacons to be erected on the south side of the harbour, which will, it is hoped, prevent future losses on the Herd Sand. ....."

The River Tyne and mention of Herd Sands.

p.s what would be the difference between beacons and lighthouses during AoS period. My only understand of a beacon are like the ones illustrated here used in yesteryear as a chain of them across the country heralding danger - as at the Armada - but these days in time of celebration.

I'm open to correction, as usual. :)

A beacon is a much simpler type of seamark than a lighthouse. It usually consists of a post or pile and is unlit. The qualification of “heading” is unusual and may mean that these were transit beacons i.e. two leading marks which, when kept in line, indicate that you are in navigable water. Such transit beacons usually mark a channel between dangers on either side.

Far from immense and very patchy!

As the Tyne is Geordie country they may do things differently there.

The Times, December 5th, 1788:

" .... A plan is now before the Board, composed by the Elder Brethren of the Trinity-house Corporation for the future lighting of all the Beacons in the several parts of the Sea Coasts of the kingdom with reflector-lamps, instead of the present mode of sea-coal fire; the experiments that have been made proving its utility above every other method whatever. ....."
