 Drum beating
From The Times, January 8, 1805:
" .... A fog, unusually thick, prevailed at Portsmouth, last Wednesday, when (and it should be noticed as a novel effort of nautical zeal and skill) the Prince of Wales, of 98 guns, was led out of the harbour at Spithead, by a drum being sent from the ship, and beat at the different buoys, where the atmosphere was so dense, that she could not distinctly be seen even when passing the platform ......."

I'm impressed that the boatmen could find the buoys. "Nautical zeal and skill" is right!

...yes, wouldn't that have been fun finding them.....wonder how long it took them!
