Post Anchorages
THE DOWNS

When I was in Kent the week before last it didn't take much imagination to stand at either the castles of Deal or Walmer and "see" in your mind's eye vessels in the Downs anchorage.

I found this painting by Holman on the NMM site: The Indiaman 'Royal George' in Three Positions in the Downs, 1779.

I thought it might be fun to add other anchorages to this thread.

THE AVON AT BRISTOL?

I rather like this one, too. Can you imagine the precise manoeuvering needed in a confined area like the one depicted?

I often wonder about the shipping in the Age of Sail having to navigate up the River Nene to my own town of Wisbech. Down near the Wash I watched a boat trying to tack up the river; not easy by the look of it! :)

... but back to the painting illustrated in the link above. What do you suppose the chaps in the boat in the foreground are doing? Laying something like fish traps?

My guess is that they are a form of lobster pots - maybe a specific design common to the shallow waters around the Dutch and North German coasts.
