 Navy Sunday
I saw the term "Navy Sunday" somewhere, and I can't find it now. As I recall, it was in reference to wash day and was actually on Wednesdays... I think.
Does this ring a bell with anyone?

Does this ring a bell with anyone? You may be thinking of "Make and Mend" which was a half-day that the sailors were allowed to repair and make clothing, plait hair, and otherwise be at leisure. Normally it was on Sunday.

 Re: Navy Sunday
I think it was in reference to more in the way of housekeeping: washing hammocks and clothes and such. The more I think on it, perhaps it was a merchantman's derisive reference to what the Navy did on Sundays, but they did on Wednesdays.
Gads!!! This getting old is h... difficult!
I'll keep looking, but any thoughts from any direction would be helpful.

 Re: Navy Sunday
Quite hepful... in regards to the washing. Now I just need to figure out the reference. I'm still thinking it's from the merchantmen, so I'll try that route.
Thanks so much!
