Post Sunboard & Sunstone
I just started watching a new series titled "Vikings" on the History Channel here in the US. Mentioned and demonstrated were two navigation devices called a Sunboard (or Sun Board) and Sunstone. The first assisted Viking ships to row/sail due West and the second allowed the Viking sailor to find the sun on cloudy days. I realize that the 8th to the 11th centuries are outside the time period of the group and that Viking long ships were primarily galleys, but I wondered if anyone here had some first-hand knowledge of such devices or could point me to some literature on them.
