 Escort duties
It's always interesting to read how naval ships, their crews occupied their time, and I rather liked this one of royal escort duty.
The Times, December 21, 1785:
" ... Orders are gone down to Portsmouth for fitting out a squadron of frigates, which are to rendezvous at Spithead; their destination is not known, but it is conjectured that they are to proceed to the North Sea to meet the Prince Royal of Denmark, whom they are to escort to England. We hear, that to the frigates is to be added a ship of the line, to carry an Admiral's flag or a broad pendant, and the Formidable is talked of for that purpose. She is the vessel that carried Rodney's victorious flag on the glorious 12th of April. ....."
