The Times, January 24th, 1801:

" .... The Navy Board lately made a proposal to the Ship-wrights and House-carpenters in Chatham dockyard, who are entitled to the chips that they make, to allow sixpence per day in lieu, and gave them time to consider of it, and send to them at the Board their answer. The men met and formed a Committee, who have since sent a Petition, that they will give up their claim for eightpence per day; the reason they assign is, the increase of the price of fuel, as well as every necessary of life. ...."

Considering the last dozen words or so it seems nothing changes! :D

The Times, September 9th, 1785:

" .... Extract of a letter from Chatham. Sept.5 'The shipwrights, &c who are now perimitted to earn two tides a day by task work during the summer months, will have their extra reduced to one tide, after the 30th of this present month.

The London of 90 guns, Infelxible of 74, and Rasionable of 64, are now in this dock-yard under a thorough repair.' ....."
