HMS Victory can still show two 68 (not 64) pdr carronades.

The Carron Company's name appears on many a British post, or pillar, box. It is interesting to think of them as huge, up-ended, carronades.

Hope this helps.

With best wishes,
David

I've been hunting through the archives, trying not to post things that might already have been discussed... am looking for some information on carronades. I've got the basic stuff, but what I was wondering is what size carronade a 6th-rate ship might have. 24lb? 12 a bit small? I'm dealing with an old 9-pounder 28, in 1796, & assuming they would have a few carronades on the weather deck... but was there a standard size a ship like that might get?

Any reason you couldn't fire grapeshot out of one? Is there any particular advantage / disadvantage, other than that maybe your carronade happens to bear & your long guns don't?
Thanks for any suggestions...

The establishment provided for the Sixth Rate 28 gun frigates to have 6 x 24pdr carronades (4 on the quarterdeck and 2 on the forecastle) in addition to its rated long guns (24 x 9pdr, 4 x 6pdr).

They certainly were used to fire grape shot.

I think I passed this on a preliminary skim through the gunner's manual; am about halfway through looking at it properly.
This is helpful, thanks. :)
