Post Sea Service Muskets
I was wondering if anyone has ever come across any thing about the RN issuing Sea Service muskets with slings? From the period drawings I have seen I can not tell. Thanks for any help.

Hi Chris,

I have a PDF file of a manual called Exercise of the Small Arms and Great Guns, for the Seamen on Board His Majesty's Ships. Unfortunately, I don't know what year it was published (date not on the pages I have, but I'm guessing it's 1700s due to the terminology). Maybe someone else knows for sure?

Anyway...in the section on "Exercise of the Granades [sic]" there are a few steps in which slings are mentioned. Example:

47. Sling your Firelocks.
"Bring the Sling with your Left Hand just above your Right Shoulder, and at the same Time bring your Firelock with your Right Hand under your Left Elbow; tell 1, 2, and draw the Sling with your Left Hand, letting loose the Right, that the Firelock may hang upon the Right Shoulder with the Muzzle up, and the Butt End downward, bringing both Hands to hang by your Sides."

Hope that helps. Will see if I can find the year of publication.

The title type looks the same, but the copy I have doesn't have the date or the picture. The page count is about the same.

If you (or anyone else) are interested in having a copy of it, let me know.

I would definitely be interested if it's not too much trouble.

I'd love a copy of that.
