Post Harry Burrard Neale
Found a bit about Mil's favorite, Sir Harry.

This is from The Idler in Italy (Volume II) by Marguerite, Countess of Blessington:

"Yesterday, we went on board the Revenge, commanded by Admiral Sir Harry Neale. It is a magnificent ship; and the admiral is the very beau idéal of a British flag-officer. Handsome, dignified and amiable, no wonder that he is so beloved by his crew, and so respected and esteemed by all who know him."

Tom Pocock in Breaking the Chains said much the same of his description, although, of course, the one you quote is a primary source, a first-hand account.

Thanks for posting. I'm always keen to read anything that adds to my knowledge of HBN.

From a letter by Robert Clement Sconce to one of his daughters:

"...I like Sir Harry Neale more and more. We are quite as intimate with each other as I used to be with Sir John Gore. He does everything he possibly can to show kindness, both to me and to Robin [Sconce's young son, Robert]. He is very fond of sketching, and often goes out with me when I go to draw. He says that when we come back he will get some saddle-horses, that we may ride together. I never saw such a liberal man as he is. He has a good fortune, and never spares any expense to make everybody about him comfortable. he never lets me spend any money at all, but as we go everywhere together, he says, as he is richer than I am, he must pay for all."

From: Life and Letters of Robert Clement Sconce - Volume I (1861). Sconce acted as secretary to various naval officers. His mother was a cousin of Lady Nelson.

....the more I hear of him, the more I like Sir Harry, even though dear Jack Aubrey wasn't too fond of him.

Thanks, Susan, for that snippet to add to my collection.

The Sconce book is quite interesting because of the different POV. Mil, you probably will find even more items of interest to you since he served with Sir Harry for a little over 3 years.

That's cool! It's good to see him recognized.

Yes, I agree. One day, I'll get down there and see his monument.
